New HSE Metalworking Fluid Quality Campaign Supported by Eclipse Magnetics

Eclipse Magnetics Supports HSE Metalworking Fluid Quality Campaign

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of complying with the law regarding controlling substances hazardous to health, with particular focus on machining with metalworking fluids.

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 (COSHH) requires employers to ensure that exposure to metalworking fluids is adequately managed and controlled. In conjunction with the HSE, the guidance states that when machining with metalworking fluids, the maintenance of fluid quality is key to controlling risk.

Guidance on Managing Fluid Quality

As experts in metalworking fluid filtration, Eclipse Magnetics has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the maintenance of metalworking fluid, including safe handling and disposal of oils and coolants. As stated in ‘MW5, COSHH essentials for machining with metalworking fluids,’ the latest guidance on managing fluid quality, employers are required to “remove fines using centrifuges, filtration systems or magnetic separators (for ferrous materials).”

Nigel Hampson, Sales Manager for Filtration at Eclipse Magnetics said:Eclipse Magnetics knows that the maintenance of metalworking fluid is absolutely essential to prevent ill health in machine workshops, therefore the correct maintenance of such fluids is a must. In accordance with HSE and COSHH guidelines, magnetic filtration is an effective way to maintain metalworking fluids by reducing contamination, minimising microbial growth, decreasing the need for biocides, and reducing cleaning risks.

The latest restriction on biocide use means that the maintenance of metalworking fluids has never been more important; contamination including swarf metal fines can increase the risk of microbial growth, making its effective removal an absolute must.”

Whitepaper on Safe Handling of Metalworking Fluids

Eclipse Magnetics has published an exclusive whitepaper titled “The Safe Handling of Metalworking Fluids” which explores the risks of metalworking fluids to operators, and goes into detail regarding the legal responsibility of employers in relation to The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH). It’s also a must read for ensuring compliance with The United Kingdom Lubricants Association (UKLA)’s good practice guide for the safe handling and disposal of metal working fluid, compiled in conjunction with the Metalworking Fluid Product Stewardship Group (MWFPSG) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Our patented magnetic filtration systems are the ultimate in filtration technology, providing cost, quality, environmental, and health benefits.
